Scottish filmmaker Gregor D Sinclair has experienced the challenges of his craft firsthand while filming Hardangerfolk, a documentary about a top-secret mission to stop Hitler from developing nuclear weapons during World War II. Despite being stranded in a blizzard in Norway for three days, he remained dedicated to capturing the story.
Growing up on a farm in Orkney’s Northern Isles, Mr Sinclair’s deep connection to rural communities and natural landscapes inspired him to establish Scotica Film in 2019. His passion for film and the environment led him to create content that combines these two loves, such as the gruelling two-week shoot of Hardangerfolk.
The documentary follows 12 members of the Norwegian Resistance skiing over 370 miles to prevent the creation of an atomic bomb, showcasing the power of human determination and courage. Despite facing challenges during production, Mr Sinclair’s commitment to storytelling remained unwavering.
Recently, Scotica Film welcomed creative director Rachel Sarah to the team, allowing the company to work on a variety of commercial and artistic projects. However, like many in the industry, they have felt the impact of reduced arts funding, making it challenging to expand as planned.
The outdoor industry has also faced setbacks, with a decline in sales and marketing budgets following the post-Covid boom. Despite these challenges, Mr Sinclair remains dedicated to producing meaningful content, including a feature-length film that explores his upbringing on Sanday.
Through his work, he hopes to bridge the gap between different perspectives, such as those of crofters, farmers, and environmentalists. By highlighting the shared respect for the land that unites these groups, documentaries can offer a unique insight into diverse viewpoints, fostering understanding and empathy.
As Mr Sinclair navigates the changing landscape of the film industry and the outdoor sector, his commitment to storytelling and capturing the beauty of the natural world remains steadfast. With each project, he continues to demonstrate the unparalleled power of art to inspire, educate, and connect people from all walks of life.
