Royal Mail has announced that an original illustration of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Edinburgh will feature on the Second Class stamp for its Christmas Special Stamps in 2024. The stamps will showcase some of the most stunning cathedrals in the UK, with Liverpool, Armagh, Bangor, and Westminster also being featured in the set.

The artwork for the stamps was created by British artist, Judy Joel, who is based in Penzance. Joel’s paintings have gained popularity worldwide over the past five decades, making her a fitting choice for this project.

The Very Revd John Conway, Provost of St Mary’s Cathedral, expressed his gratitude for the cathedral being chosen for the stamp, highlighting the magnificent design by George Gilbert Scott. He mentioned that cathedrals come to life during Christmas, and the painting on the stamp captures the essence of the season.

David Gold, Director of External Affairs and Policy at Royal Mail, emphasized the cultural significance of cathedrals and their role in local communities. He also mentioned that cathedrals provide a space for reflection and solace, especially during the holiday season.

St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral, located in the West End of Edinburgh, was built between 1874 and 1879 based on George Gilbert Scott’s neo-Gothic design. It stands as the tallest building in Edinburgh, alongside two other cathedrals in the city.

The cathedral has a rich history of vibrant choral traditions and continues to hold regular choral services throughout the week. It serves as a place of prayer, peace, and tranquility, welcoming visitors from all walks of life.

In celebration of the new millennium, a stained-glass window designed by the renowned artist Eduardo Paolozzi was installed in the South Transept. This unique piece adds a colorful touch to the cathedral’s interior, creating a mesmerizing effect when the sun shines through.

St Mary’s Cathedral plays a central role in Edinburgh’s Christmas festivities, with special services and events held to mark the birth of Christ. The Services of Nine Lessons and Carols, in particular, attract a large crowd during the holiday season.

Overall, the inclusion of St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral on Royal Mail’s 2024 Christmas stamp is a testament to the cathedral’s beauty and cultural significance. It serves as a reminder of the rich history and traditions associated with cathedrals in the UK, bringing joy and inspiration to all who see it.
