Carl Morenikeji, the managing director of Scaramanga, a vintage furniture and interiors and leather bags business, shared his journey of starting the business in 2006 after traveling around the world. He emphasized the sustainability and ethical practices of the company, sourcing vintage furniture that would otherwise end up in landfills and making bags ethically in India.
The business, based in Cupar, Fife, has seen significant success over the years. They sell to consumers worldwide, as well as to bars, restaurants, boutique hotels, and independent stores, along with supplying props for film and television projects. Notably, Scaramanga has provided items for 16 global entertainment franchise productions, including the Marvel films.
With a turnover ranging between £300,000 and £500,000, Scaramanga currently employs six individuals. Carl’s background includes working for BT Wholesale and as a business consultant before venturing into the vintage business. His passion for sustainability and ethical practices has been the driving force behind Scaramanga’s success.
The company’s ambitions include growing the wholesale side of the business and launching more ranges based on reclaimed and salvaged materials. Despite challenges in the market due to economic pressures on households, Carl remains optimistic about the future of the business.
Reflecting on the most valuable lesson learned, Carl emphasized the importance of paying a fair price to suppliers and trading ethically. This approach has led to strong, long-term relationships with suppliers as the business continues to grow. While facing challenges such as supplier issues early on, Scaramanga has overcome obstacles and continued to thrive in the vintage market.
In his personal life, Carl finds relaxation in reading and traveling, with a love for exploring different cultures and places. Inspired by the quote “Buy less, choose well, make it last” by Vivienne Westwood, he embodies the ethos of durable and well-made products. Additionally, Carl’s passion for photography and travel shines through, with a desire to capture the beauty of lesser-known places.
Overall, Carl Morenikeji’s journey with Scaramanga exemplifies the success that comes from dedication to sustainability, ethical practices, and quality craftsmanship. As the business looks towards the future, Carl’s vision for growth and continued commitment to these values will undoubtedly drive Scaramanga to further accomplishments in the vintage industry.
