The holiday season is fast approaching, and with it comes the busiest time of year for retail workers. As shoppers gear up for Black Friday deals and Christmas shopping, there are concerns about potential conflicts and mistreatment towards retail staff.

A recent survey conducted by trade union Usdaw revealed some alarming statistics. It showed that 69 percent of retail staff have experienced verbal abuse, 45 percent have been threatened by customers, and almost one in five have been physically assaulted while on the job. These incidents, including a shocking case of someone being stabbed with a screwdriver, highlight the challenges faced by those working in the retail sector.

The survey also found that 70% of the incidents were triggered by shoplifting, while two-thirds were linked to addiction. This sheds light on the complex and challenging nature of working in retail, especially during the holiday rush when stores are bustling with customers.

Retail is a crucial sector in Scotland, employing 230,000 people directly. As the festive period approaches, the Scottish Retail Consortium (SRC) and Usdaw are joining forces to urge the public to show kindness and respect towards retail workers. This campaign comes at a time when shops are getting busier, and tensions may run high.

David Lonsdale, Director of the Scottish Retail Consortium, emphasized the importance of treating store colleagues and delivery drivers with respect. He noted that any mistreatment, whether verbal or physical, can have a significant impact on victims, their families, and colleagues. By showing a little Christmas kindness and courtesy, everyone can have a more enjoyable shopping experience and support local jobs.

Tony Doonan, Scottish Regional Secretary of Usdaw, echoed these sentiments, stressing that retail workers deserve to be treated with respect and kindness. He highlighted the need to address the abuse and violence faced by shopworkers, especially during the holiday season when theft and shoplifting incidents tend to increase.

The survey results paint a grim picture of the challenges faced by retail workers, with many experiencing threats and violence from customers. Organized crime gangs targeting retail stores have also contributed to a rise in theft incidents, leading to confrontations and abuse against shop workers. This not only affects the victims directly but also has broader implications for their well-being and safety.

Usdaw has been advocating for legislation to protect workers in the retail sector, but more needs to be done to address the growing wave of retail crime. By raising awareness about the importance of respecting and supporting retail staff, we can create a safer and more positive environment for everyone during the holiday season. Let’s spread holiday cheer by showing kindness towards those who work hard to make our shopping experiences enjoyable.
