In August 2023, The Coigach Community Development Company (CCDC) decided to sell the former smokehouse site in Altandhu, Coigach, to fund new affordable homes in the remote Scottish community.

Since acquiring the site in 2007, CCDC explored various initiatives, including securing planning permission for two houses. However, the development of the site would have taken resources away from other important CCDC projects. Therefore, the decision was made to focus on building affordable homes at the ‘Achagarry’ site in Achiltibuie instead.

Expressions of Interest for the smokehouse site were accepted in September 2023, and an offer from Summer Isles Enterprises was ultimately chosen. The sale was finalized after ensuring the protection of access rights to the neighboring croft for future generations.

The funds generated from the sale will be used to speed up the construction of 10 new affordable homes at Achagarry. This is particularly crucial as build costs have been increasing significantly due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.

CCDC Chairperson, Richard Williams, expressed his satisfaction with the deal, stating, “We are very pleased to have secured a good deal for the community, raising essential capital to support the ongoing Achagarry development, while also ensuring a positive future for the former Smokehouse site.”

This sale not only provides much-needed funds for affordable housing but also demonstrates a strategic approach to community development. By prioritizing the Achagarry project over the smokehouse site, CCDC is ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently to meet the community’s most pressing needs.

The decision to sell the smokehouse site reflects CCDC’s commitment to responsible and sustainable development. By leveraging assets to generate revenue for crucial projects, the community is taking proactive steps to address the housing challenges faced by its residents.

Moving forward, CCDC’s focus on affordable housing will have a lasting impact on the remote Scottish community. The successful sale of the smokehouse site sets a positive precedent for future development initiatives, showcasing the organization’s dedication to creating a more inclusive and sustainable living environment for all residents.
