A student from the Open University in Glasgow had a memorable graduation ceremony when he proposed to his partner of eight years. Steven Bell, who completed a BSc (Honours) in Geography and Environmental Science after four years of study, got down on one knee and received a sweet ‘I do’ from his boyfriend Clark Edgar.
Steven, who works for ScottishPower and is a former member of the Armed Forces 3 SCOTS, described the day as unforgettable, especially since it was also his birthday. He emphasized the importance of the OU’s flexibility in allowing him to juggle work, studies, and personal life, encouraging others to pursue their educational goals.
Clark, who was moved by the proposal, expressed his pride in Steven’s achievements and dedication, making the day even more special for both of them. The heartfelt moment took place at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, where 660 graduates, including Steven, celebrated their academic accomplishments.
The Open University, which recently marked its 50th anniversary, continues to uphold its values of inclusion and flexibility. A significant number of this year’s graduates declared disabilities, were the first in their families to pursue higher education, and received part-time fee grants to support their studies.
The story of Steven’s proposal adds a heartwarming touch to the celebration of academic success and personal milestones. It serves as a reminder of the importance of support from loved ones and the joy of sharing significant moments with those closest to us. As Steven and Clark embark on this new chapter together, their story reflects the spirit of determination, love, and commitment that defines the journey of every individual pursuing their dreams through education.
