Council officials in Inverclyde have given the green light to a plan that will see the historic former Star Hotel in Port Glasgow transformed into a combination of flats and shops.

The change-of-use application, submitted by BR Homes Ltd, includes converting the ground floor public bar and lounge bar into two separate retail units. Additionally, the upper floors of the building, which previously housed nine bedrooms, will be repurposed into seven apartments, featuring both one and two-bedroom units.

The Star Hotel, which ceased operations in March of last year, has a long-standing presence in the town center of Port Glasgow dating back to the 19th century. Over the years, the establishment has served as a bar and has even been utilized as a filming location for various projects.

One notable production that took place at the Star Hotel was the filming of the movie “Nina’s Heavenly Delights” in 2005. The film, penned by Greenock writer Andrea Gibb, tells the story of an Indian family in the 1980s and brought the cast and crew to the venue for shooting.

The approval of this revitalization project signals a new chapter for the historic Star Hotel, breathing fresh life into the building and contributing to the ongoing development of Port Glasgow’s town center. By repurposing the space into a combination of residential and commercial units, the project aims to not only preserve the heritage of the building but also to create new opportunities for the local community.

As the town continues to evolve, initiatives like the conversion of the Star Hotel play a vital role in maintaining the character of Port Glasgow while also meeting the changing needs of its residents. The blend of residential and retail spaces in the revamped building reflects a thoughtful approach to urban planning and demonstrates a commitment to sustainable development in the area.

Looking ahead, the transformation of the former hotel into flats and shops is poised to inject new energy into the heart of Port Glasgow, setting the stage for a vibrant and dynamic future for the town center. With its rich history and strategic location, the Star Hotel redevelopment project is set to become a cornerstone of the community, offering a blend of modern amenities and historic charm for residents and visitors alike.
