Oban has been named Scotland’s Town of the Year after a remarkable year that highlighted the town’s transformation and community spirit. The award was given after judges heard how the people of Oban came together to reinvent their town in Argyllshire.

This recognition comes following the successful hosting of The Royal National Mòd, which celebrated Gaelic language, culture, and heritage, attracting over 10,000 visitors. In addition, Oban received a significant economic boost as a host port in The Clipper Round The World Yacht Race, showcasing the town on a global scale.

STV weather presenter Sean Batty, an ambassador for Scotland Loves Local, commended the passion and dedication of the Oban community, emphasizing the town’s special charm and the role of its residents in keeping it vibrant. The award was presented to community champions in Oban, acknowledging their hard work and commitment.

The judges, brought together by Scotland’s Towns Partnership, faced the challenging task of selecting the Town of the Year, sponsored by tech firm Vicinity. The Chief Officer of Scotland’s Towns Partnership, Kimberley Guthrie, praised Oban for its outstanding achievements and community-driven initiatives that led to this well-deserved recognition.

Much of Oban’s recent transformation has been attributed to the efforts of the town’s Business Improvement District, BID4Oban, which has fostered collaborations with businesses, organizations, and individuals since its establishment in 2012. These partnerships have supported various projects, from enhancing the town’s aesthetics with festive lights and greenery to attracting cruise ships and organizing events like Oban Pride Weekend.

Andrew Spence, BID4Oban’s Chief Executive, expressed his delight at Oban’s success, highlighting the town’s revitalization over the past 12 years. Through teamwork and partnerships, Oban has become a vibrant destination known for its welcoming atmosphere and unique offerings. The feedback received after hosting the Clipper race further underscored Oban’s appeal as a top-notch stopover port.

Councillor Jim Lynch, Leader of Argyll and Bute Council, shared his pride in Oban’s achievements, noting the council’s investments in improving the town center and infrastructure. He highlighted the economic benefits and community spirit showcased during events like the Clipper Round The World Race and the Royal National Mòd, emphasizing the town’s potential as a marine tourism hub.

Overall, Oban’s recognition as Scotland’s Town of the Year reflects a collective effort to revitalize the town, showcase its unique charm, and strengthen community bonds. The award serves as a testament to Oban’s resilience, creativity, and commitment to creating a welcoming and thriving environment for residents and visitors alike.
