CalMac announces start date for long-awaited ferry service
The long-awaited date for the commencement of one of Scotland’s ‘fiasco’ ferries has been revealed by CalMac.
MV Glen Sannox will finally set sail on Monday, January 13th, with regular trips from Troon to Brodick on Arran. This announcement comes after the conclusion of an in-water service on the Clyde-built ship on Thursday, December 19th.
CalMac confirmed the date, bringing an end to the anticipation surrounding the ferry that has been more than six years overdue and millions of pounds over budget.
### Crew Familiarization and Sea Trials
Since being handed over in mid-November, the crew of MV Glen Sannox has been engaging in familiarization activities, including sea trials. Duncan Mackison, CalMac’s CEO, expressed excitement about getting the vessel into service and serving Arran, highlighting the positive feedback received from the crew on the ship’s performance.
### Additional Capacity and Service Routes
The MV Glen Sannox will provide additional capacity on the CalMac network’s busiest route, operating between Troon and Brodick. It will be part of a two-vessel service, with MV Caledonian Isles scheduled to be operational on the Ardrossan to Brodick route in March.
### MV Caledonian Isles Status Update
The MV Caledonian Isles, which experienced multiple breakdowns, is on track to return to service for the summer timetable starting on March 28, 2025. The vessel will undergo steel renewal works after re-entering drydock on December 20th.
### Positive Outlook for Arran Community
Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop expressed her delight at the entry of MV Glen Sannox into service, emphasizing the vessel’s role in supporting Arran and the wider ferry network. She highlighted the Scottish Government’s commitment to investing in new vessels to enhance services for island communities.
Overall, the arrival of MV Glen Sannox and the anticipated return of MV Caledonian Isles signal positive developments for the Arran community, with increased capacity and improved ferry services on the horizon. Stay tuned for the full winter timetable of MV Glen Sannox, reflecting community input and set to be released soon.
