Glasgow’s King’s Theatre is buzzing with excitement as they celebrate one of their own today. Joan Neil, the Head Stage Door Keeper, is commemorating an impressive 50 years of service at the theatre, a remarkable achievement since she first joined the team on this day in 1974.

This year holds special significance for the theatre as they mark 120 years on Bath Street in Glasgow. Additionally, the upcoming festive season will witness the 60th annual pantomime performance at the King’s Theatre, adding to the celebratory atmosphere.

However, today is all about Joan and her incredible dedication to the venue. She kickstarted her career at the King’s Theatre during a week-long run of Billy Connolly shows back in 1974. It was during this time that Connolly famously recorded his comedy album, ‘Cop Yer Whack for This’. Since then, Joan has been a constant presence at the Stage Door, warmly welcoming staff, performers, and visitors over the years.

The Theatre Director, James Haworth, expressed his admiration for Joan, describing her as the heart of the King’s Theatre. Her warmth, passion, and unwavering dedication have touched the lives of countless performers and audience members throughout the years. Joan is not just a colleague but an integral part of the theatre’s history and community.

In recognition of her valuable contributions to the cultural heritage of Glasgow, Joan was honored with an Inspiring City Award in 2014. Her role in the annual pantomime press night, particularly the ‘Fish and Chip Night,’ is highly anticipated by all. Joan wears a special chip shop coat, a prop from the National Theatre of Scotland’s production of ‘Yer Granny,’ signed by Scottish acting legends like Gregor Fisher, Maureen Beattie, and Barbara Rafferty, adding a touch of magic to the event.

To celebrate Joan’s remarkable 50 years of service, the King’s Theatre is organizing a special event later this month. The celebration will be attended by staff, invited guests, and promises some exciting surprises to honor Joan’s dedication and commitment to the theatre over the decades. Joan’s milestone is a testament to her unwavering passion for the arts and the King’s Theatre, making her a beloved figure in the hearts of many.
