We are thrilled to once again be teaming up with The Herald for our annual Christmas Appeal, which aims to provide books to children and families who visit food banks during the winter season.

Books have an incredible power, especially for children and young people. They have the ability to help mitigate the effects of disadvantage and have a lasting impact on a child’s life. Unfortunately, many families in Scotland are currently facing difficult circumstances due to the ongoing cost of living crisis. With over a million people in poverty in Scotland, a quarter of whom are children, it is crucial that we provide access to books for those who need them most.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to speak at the Goethe Institute in Athens on behalf of EURead, a network of organizations in Europe dedicated to promoting reading and literacy. This event marked the launch of a statement urging European leaders to recognize the importance of reading as a fundamental human right and as essential for democracy. This mission has been at the core of our charity’s work for the past 25 years.

Literacy, from basic reading skills to critical thinking, is essential for a modern democracy. The ability to read not only unlocks human potential but also plays a key role in learning, personal growth, and societal contribution. There is strong evidence to suggest that literacy is a powerful tool in breaking the poverty cycle and fostering human agency.

This year, our Christmas Appeal features Eric Carle’s beloved character, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, thanks to the generosity of Penguin Random House LLC and The World of Eric Carle. Mary Mekarnom, Senior Director at Penguin Random House, shared Eric Carle’s belief that every child is unique and has individual needs when it comes to learning and responding to books. We are hopeful that The Very Hungry Caterpillar can make a difference in the lives of children and families in need.

Books have the ability to provide comfort, escapism, and unity within families. Every child deserves the magic of a book, and we are committed to ensuring that no child misses out. Donations to our appeal will help provide essential support to those who need it most this holiday season.

Let’s come together to ensure that every child has access to the joy and comfort that books bring. Your donation can make a real difference in the life of a child like Sophie.

Donate now to bring the magic of books to a child in need this Christmas.
