A Dundee ice hockey player, Darren Donaldson, has been sentenced to four years and six months in prison at the High Court in Glasgow for raping a teenage girl in his car. The incident took place on the night of August 4, 2022, when the victim, who was heavily intoxicated and unable to give consent, was taken by Donaldson to a location where he raped her.
Donaldson, who was 17 at the time of the attack, had met the victim through friends and teammates. She was under the age of 16 when the assault occurred. The victim, after waking up the next day and experiencing flashbacks, reported the incident to the police.
In addition to his prison sentence, Donaldson has been added to the sex offenders register indefinitely and is prohibited from contacting the victim for 15 years. Scotland’s Procurator Fiscal for High Court Sexual Offending, Katrina Parkes, emphasized the importance of coming forward and seeking justice for similar offenses.
Detective Constable Mark Guild of Police Scotland commended the victim for her bravery in coming forward and assisting with the investigation. He encouraged others who have been victims of sexual crimes to report them to the authorities, assuring full support from law enforcement and partner agencies.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding perpetrators of sexual crimes accountable and supporting victims throughout the legal process. It highlights the need for individuals to speak out against such offenses and seek justice. The bravery of the victim in this case demonstrates the strength it takes to come forward and report such traumatic experiences.
Sexual assault is a serious crime that can have long-lasting effects on the victim.
