The UK is like, apparently about to hand the keys to No 10 over to Nigel Farage or something, according to former Scottish first minister Humza Yousaf. He went on a rant about the Prime Minister’s immigration stance, calling it a “dog whistle” and all that jazz.
In a speech where Sir Keir Starmer talked about some immigration changes, he said the UK might become an “island of strangers” if they don’t tighten controls on people coming in.
Number 10 was like, “Nah, our stuff is totally different from Enoch Powell’s ‘rivers of blood’ speech in 1968,” but Yousaf was all like, “Nah, it’s basically the same, just with different words.” He thinks migrants are the real MVPs who keep Britain running.
Yousaf wrote an article for LBC where he was like, “Starmer’s talk about ‘strangers’ is just a fancy way of blaming migrants for everything that’s wrong in the country.” He thinks the UK needs migrants to survive and thrive, not walls to keep them out.
The former SNP leader, who is super proud of his immigrant grandparents, called out the UK Government for making people wait longer to apply for settled status and raising the bar for English skills. They’re also cutting overseas recruitment for care home workers.
Yousaf said the Prime Minister is basically copying the Conservatives and Nigel Farage, which is not cool. He pointed out that a lot of doctors in England are not British and that social care in Scotland relies heavily on overseas staff.
He basically told the Prime Minister, “Stop dissing immigrants as ‘strangers’ because they’re the ones keeping this ship afloat, mate.”
Anas Sarwar, the Scottish Labour leader, got some heat too for going along with the PM’s plans. Yousaf was like, “Dude, your dad wouldn’t even be allowed in the UK with these rules. What are you even doing?”
Yousaf praised his successor, John Swinney, for standing up against Reform’s nasty talk and supporting inclusivity. He thinks more politicians should have guts like Swinney.
But a spokesperson for Sarwar was like, “Yousaf doesn’t get it, man. You can support immigrants and still want a controlled system. It’s not black and white like he thinks.”
They also threw shade at Yousaf for causing a social care crisis in Scotland in the past. Ouch.
So, it seems like there’s some drama brewing in the UK political scene. Who knows what’s gonna happen next?
