Christina Hendry to Run for Alex Salmond’s Former Seat
Christina Hendry, the niece of former first minister Alex Salmond, has officially announced her candidacy to run for a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) in one of her uncle’s former seats. The Alba Party made the announcement, revealing that Hendry, 29, will be contesting the Banffshire and Buchan Coast seat, a constituency her uncle had planned to campaign in before his untimely death in North Macedonia in October.
Personal Connection and Commitment to Legacy
Born in the north east of Scotland, Hendry currently works in child psychology in the Borders. She shared fond memories of campaigning with her uncle in the same seat when she was younger. Hendry expressed her desire to honor his name and legacy by standing in the constituency he had announced earlier this year.
“I want to honor his name and his legacy and stand in the constituency he announced earlier this year. In doing so, the people of Banffshire and Buchan Coast will be able to vote for a candidate with independence and Salmond blood running through their veins,” she said.
Advocating for the North East
Hendry highlighted the neglect the north east of Scotland, particularly Aberdeenshire, has faced from both governments. She criticized the lack of support for communities that have powered the UK economy through the oil industry for decades. Hendry raised concerns about the industry being under threat from both the Scottish and UK governments, putting numerous jobs at risk.
She also pointed out the challenges faced by the fishing and farming industries post-Brexit and emphasized the need for political parties to prioritize the interests of the north east. Hendry pledged to follow in her uncle’s footsteps by putting the region’s concerns at the forefront of her campaign.
As Christina Hendry embarks on her political journey to secure her uncle’s former seat in the Scottish Parliament, her personal connection to Alex Salmond’s legacy and her commitment to advocating for the neglected north east of Scotland set her apart as a candidate to watch in the upcoming election.
