A former student union building in Glasgow is set to undergo a massive transformation into a digital, entrepreneurial, and social engagement hub thanks to a generous £30 million contribution from Dr. Charles Huang, a former alumnus of the University of Strathclyde.
Renamed as the Charles Huang Advanced Technology & Innovation Centre (CHATIC) in honor of the global business leader and founder of Pasaca Capital INC, this project has been made possible through a larger £50 million donation made by Dr. Huang to the university in 2021. This contribution marks the largest philanthropic gift ever received by the University of Strathclyde.
Situated in the heart of the Glasgow City Innovation District, CHATIC will serve as a hub for advancing various technologies such as health tech, 5G communications, industrial AI, FinTech, quantum technologies, and space research. Additionally, the building will house innovation and entrepreneurship hubs, as well as a social innovation hub.
Moreover, CHATIC will offer space for businesses to co-locate within the university, fostering collaboration among companies, research organizations, and community engagement facilities to drive social and economic impact. The refurbishment of the 10-storey building, which has been vacant since Strathclyde Union relocated in 2021, is expected to be completed by 2026.
Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal & Vice-Chancellor of Strathclyde, expressed his excitement about the opportunities CHATIC will bring, emphasizing the potential for industry partnerships, research advancements, entrepreneurial ventures, and community engagement. He also extended his gratitude to Dr. Huang for his generous contribution to the project.
In addition to CHATIC, Dr. Huang’s £50 million donation has supported the establishment of the Stephen Young Institute for International Business, funded professional chairs in the institute, and created initiatives such as the Stephen Young Entrepreneurship Awards and The Stephen Young Global Leaders Scholarship Programme.
Lina Tullberg, CEO of the Charles Huang Foundation, expressed their delight in seeing the donation come to fruition through CHATIC and other funded programs. This development will complement existing projects within the Glasgow City Innovation District, further solidifying the city’s reputation as a hub for innovation and research in the UK.
