Scotland has appointed its first Trade Envoy to Japan in an effort to secure international investment. Stephen Baker, who brings with him 21 years of experience at Sony and extensive knowledge of the Japanese market, will focus on identifying new opportunities in sectors such as energy transition, pharmaceuticals, med-tech, and food.

Prior to this role, Mr. Baker worked with Scottish Development International, where he held various positions covering trade and investment in Japan. He also served as the Asia Pacific Regional Director for Inward Investment into Scotland, highlighting his expertise in fostering international business relationships.

Business Minister Richard Lochhead expressed the importance of increasing trade and attracting inward investment to support Scotland’s economy. He emphasized Scotland’s success in exporting to the Asian market and attracting investments, positioning the country as an attractive destination for international businesses.

Mr. Baker, as the Trade and Investment Envoy for Japan, acknowledged the strong partnership between Japan and the UK, with Scotland playing a key role in the energy transition. He highlighted the significant opportunities for trade and investment in Japan, encouraging businesses to include Japan in their strategies.
