A new cocktail bar and brasserie has opened in Glasgow following the closure of Gin71. After a decade in Glasgow city centre, the closure of both the Merchant City and Renfield Street branches of the specialist gin bar, known for an extensive range of botanical spirits and teapot-sharing cocktails, was announced this year. A statement posted online reads: “Gin71 Has Now Closed. “After 10 fantastic years of trading in Scotland, Gin71 has now come to an end. Both venues – Renfield Street and Merchant City have now closed.” The 71 Renfield Street location has now reopened under new ownership as Roots Cocktail Bar and Brasserie. Gin71 has said: “Please note that Roots is not associated with Gin71, and is an entirely separate new business.”
Roots welcomed its first customers on Friday, August 30, offering a selection of a la carte, lunch, and afternoon tea menus. The owners stated: “Whether you’re joining us for a leisurely brunch, indulging in a classic afternoon tea, or enjoying a meal from our carefully curated Table d’Hôte or À La Carte selections, you’ll find something to delight your palate.” They pride themselves on using the finest ingredients to craft a menu inspired by timeless recipes, celebrating the rich flavors and heritage of classic dishes, elevated to new heights.
The a la carte menu includes starters like smoked haddock and salmon fish cakes with hollandaise and pea puree, sticky soy and maple pork belly, or 48-month matured Iberico ham. For the main course, guests can choose from slow-cooked beef cheek, lemon and garlic poulet herb-coated pork fillet with oyster mushrooms and a marsala wine jus, and more. The dessert selection ranges from walnut coffee sponge cake to “traditional Sicily-style tiramisu.”
Roots also offers an impressive drinks list, including inventive cocktails and a curated wine selection to suit every taste. Additionally, the venue provides entertainment such as live performances from saxophone players. Roots is located at 71 Renfield Street in Glasgow. For more information, visit glasgowroots.co.uk.
