An 18-year-old man was taken into custody in Kirkcaldy as part of an investigation into human trafficking and modern slavery. Although he was released for further inquiry, a 52-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man were also apprehended due to immigration violations.

The investigation, spearheaded by Police Scotland, involved a joint effort with other agencies such as His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC), the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), the Gangmasters and Labour Exploitation Authority (GLAA), and Justice and Care. They conducted a visit to a business in Kirkcaldy following received intelligence.

Detective Inspector Scott Wilson from Dumfries CID emphasized the prevalence of human trafficking and modern slavery within communities. He highlighted the importance of collaboration with partners to identify such criminal activities and provide necessary support to victims. Signs of potential exploitation at work include receiving below the legal wage, experiencing financial constraints, residing in unfavorable conditions, and having restricted freedom both on and off duty.
