Hospital Implements Temporary Visitor Restrictions Due to Sickness Outbreak

In response to an outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting affecting more than 50 patients and staff, Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin, Moray, has implemented temporary visitor restrictions to prevent further spread of the illness.

Three Wards Closed to New Admissions

As a precautionary measure, three wards at the hospital, namely wards five, six, and seven, have been closed to new admissions. Patients with planned appointments have been advised to reschedule, and the Emergency Department has also been impacted by the outbreak.

Duty manager Louise Pearson emphasized the importance of protecting patients, family members, and staff by suspending non-essential visiting across the entire hospital. While recognizing the vital support that visitors provide, the decision was made to prioritize the health and safety of all individuals until the situation is resolved.

Exceptions to Visitor Restrictions

Despite the temporary restrictions, certain groups of patients will still be allowed visitors. Patients receiving palliative care, paediatric patients, individuals with dementia or a learning disability, pregnant women, and those receiving life-changing information are among the exceptions. Ward iPads are available to facilitate virtual communication with friends and family, and patients are encouraged to speak with ward staff for further information.

Ensuring Prompt Medical Attention

While the ward closures have impacted hospital capacity, Dr Gray’s Hospital remains committed to providing rapid and life-saving treatment to patients in life-threatening situations. Mrs Pearson reassured the public that individuals facing critical medical emergencies will continue to receive prompt care. Patients are advised to contact NHS 24 at 111 before visiting the Emergency Department or a Minor Injury Unit, except in cases of suspected stroke or heart attack, where immediate medical assistance should be sought by calling 999. Utilizing the 111 service helps minimize waiting times and ensures efficient management of hospital resources.
