Glen Sannox Ferry Maiden Voyage at Risk of Cancellation, CalMac Alert
The MV Glen Sannox ferry, eagerly awaited by many, faces the possibility of its maiden voyage being cancelled, as operator CalMac issues a warning. Initially set for delivery in 2018, the ferry has encountered numerous delays and technical issues at Ferguson Marine shipyard, along with its sister vessel, Glen Rosa.
Forecasted “High Winds” Pose Threat
Despite the anticipation surrounding the Glen Sannox’s debut voyage early Monday morning, the 6:30am sailing from Troon to Brodick hangs in the balance due to projected high winds. This uncertainty has led CalMac to announce the cancellation of all sailings on the MV Alfred, which also serves the mainland and Arran route, on Monday, citing adverse weather conditions.
Completion of Trial Sailing and Passenger Experience
Over the weekend, the Glen Sannox underwent a trial sailing with paying customers in preparation for its official launch. Passengers at Troon, expecting to board the MV Alfred, were pleasantly surprised by the new ferry. The journey accommodated 38 passengers and 15 cars on the outbound service, while the return trip from Brodick included 154 foot passengers, 53 cars, and two commercial vehicles.
Challenges and Delays
Despite the progress made, the Glen Sannox is not without its challenges. Issues such as oil contamination in a hydraulic system have surfaced, resulting in the closure of a mezzanine deck. While this closure is not expected to impact capacity during the winter season due to lower demand, it adds to the ongoing complications surrounding the vessel.
As the Glen Sannox’s sister ship, Glen Rosa, prepares for delivery in September, costs for both vessels are projected to surpass the initial £97 million budget significantly. However, concerns arise as a report indicates a potential delay in Glen Rosa’s handover until spring 2026, prompting Ferguson Marine’s interim chief executive, John Petticrew, to emphasize the importance of a thorough review process to ensure the safe and timely completion of the vessel.
In conclusion, the uncertain fate of the Glen Sannox’s maiden voyage highlights the complexities and challenges faced in the maritime industry, underscoring the need for meticulous planning and coordination to overcome obstacles and deliver essential services efficiently.
