The world’s largest cruise port operator has secured a 50-year lease agreement with Clydeport Operations Ltd, a Peel Ports Group subsidiary, to oversee operations at Greenock Cruise Port. This significant deal marks another milestone in the ongoing success of Greenock Cruise Port, which has seen a surge in record-breaking calls and a steady increase in passenger numbers flocking to Inverclyde year after year.

In 2024, the terminal played host to over 80 cruise ships from various corners of the globe, with expectations of even higher numbers in 2025 and beyond. Greenock has recently accommodated some of the largest cruise vessels worldwide, such as the colossal ‘Anthem of the Seas’, capable of carrying over 5,000 passengers, and the magnificent ‘Disney Dream’, boasting 18 decks and an onboard water-coaster.

Expanding on this momentum and aiming to position Greenock as a premier destination, Global Ports Holding Ltd (GPH) is set to take the reins at the cruise port. Their goal is to leverage opportunities and draw in more passengers from across the world, enhancing the overall experience for travelers.

Setting Sail Towards Success

Global Ports Holding Ltd’s acquisition of Greenock Cruise Port not only solidifies their presence in Northern Europe but also aligns with their strategy to enhance operational efficiency and passenger satisfaction. Stephen Xuereb, Chief Operating Officer of GPH, emphasized the importance of the partnership, stating, “Our priority is to enhance operational efficiency and the passenger experience while working closely with local stakeholders to unlock the port’s full potential.”

Furthermore, Mehmet Kutman, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GPH, expressed enthusiasm about welcoming Greenock Cruise Port to their network, marking a significant milestone in their UK expansion efforts. He highlighted the commitment to boosting cruise tourism in the region and collaborating with local partners to elevate Greenock’s cruise facilities and deliver exceptional experiences to visitors.

David Huck, Chief Operating Officer at Peel Ports Group, underscored the transformative impact of GPH’s involvement in Greenock Cruise Port. He praised the collaborative efforts between their teams and Inverclyde Council, emphasizing the facility’s role in driving tourism, economic growth, and local development.

Charting a Course for Growth

Inverclyde Council’s convener of environment and regeneration, Councillor Michael McCormick, expressed excitement about GPH’s arrival in Inverclyde and the prospects it brings for Greenock Cruise Port. He lauded GPH’s expertise and track record as the world’s largest cruise port operator, highlighting their potential to build upon the existing success of the terminal and stimulate economic growth for the community.

Martin McCluskey, MP for Inverclyde and Renfrewshire West, echoed the sentiments of optimism and opportunity surrounding GPH’s long-term commitment to Greenock. He emphasized the economic potential of the cruise industry for the region and pledged to collaborate with local businesses and stakeholders to maximize the benefits of this partnership.

As Greenock Cruise Port embarks on this new chapter under GPH’s management, the future looks promising for both the port and the surrounding community. With a shared vision of growth, sustainability, and exceptional visitor experiences, this collaboration has the potential to elevate Greenock as a premier cruise destination in Scotland and beyond.
