Scottish Hockey has expressed deep disappointment over the exclusion of their sport from the programme for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The governing body had pushed hard to have hockey included, but both the men’s and women’s teams will now miss out on the opportunity to compete.
Hockey has been a prominent sport at the Commonwealth Games since 1998 and is popular in many Commonwealth countries like England, India, and Scotland. Scotland boasts international teams at various levels, including senior men and women, as well as junior teams for both sexes.
In a statement released by Scottish Hockey, they acknowledged the need for compromises to ensure the financial feasibility of the event. While they are pleased that Glasgow will host the games in 2026, they are saddened by the exclusion of hockey and empathize with the athletes, staff, and officials who will miss out on the experience.
The CEO of Scottish Hockey, Derek Keir, expressed deep disappointment over the decision, highlighting the diverse representation and strong presence of hockey in Commonwealth nations. Despite this setback, Scottish Hockey is optimistic about the upcoming year in 2025, where international teams will be competing at the highest level of the sport.
Keir also mentioned that Scottish Hockey will continue to support their athletes, staff, and officials as they compete on the international stage, representing Scotland with pride. The Commonwealth Games Federation clarified that the exclusion of hockey from the 2026 programme does not impact the sport’s position in future Games.
It is unfortunate that hockey will not be featured in the upcoming Commonwealth Games, especially considering its longstanding history in the event. However, Scottish Hockey remains committed to promoting and developing the sport domestically and internationally, ensuring that their athletes have the opportunity to showcase their talents on the world stage.
